Introduction
Youth Dream Alliance (YDA) is a youth-led organization working for the welfare and development of young people and communities in surrounding Bhitai Farm and District Sanghar. Since the 2022 floods, YDA has independently implemented programs and partnered with national and local NGOs, with a strong focus on climate change, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), environmental protection, and meaningful youth engagement. This activity was self-funded and executed by Youth Dream Alliance (YDA).
Objective
To educate community members and youth on the vital role of trees in combating climate change, and to motivate them to actively participate in local tree plantation drives that improve environmental sustainability.
Key Initiatives
Tree Plantation & Community Nursery
In response to rising temperatures and climate impacts, YDA has prioritized tree plantation and green initiatives. Recognizing the acute shortage of tree cover in the area, YDA established a community nursery at Bairani. The nursery cultivates diverse species of trees and plants, which are then distributed to communities during plantation drives and environmental awareness campaigns.
Community Awareness
YDA has conducted extensive environmental awareness and youth mobilization activities in Taluka Jam Nawaz Ali and Tando Adam. Through these programs, young people have been trained as Climate Champions, and now lead local efforts to raise awareness on climate change, environmental conservation, tree plantation, and building community resilience.
YDA actively participates in DRR trainings, awareness sessions, and capacity-building workshops organized with partner NGOs and development organizations. Youth from YDA are also engaged with Union Council Disaster Management Committees (UC-DMCs). Their involvement is strengthening community preparedness, improving disaster risk management, and enhancing local resilience.
Tree Plantation Campaign at Bhitai Farm — 28 August 2026
As part of its ongoing efforts, YDA organized a tree plantation campaign at Surrounding Bhitai Farm on 28 August 2026. Schoolchildren and community members participated in planting trees.
The area has very limited tree cover, making this initiative critical for improving air quality, providing shade, supporting biodiversity, and mitigating the effects of extreme heat. This activity demonstrates that tree plantation is more than an environmental gesture — it is a practical intervention for climate adaptation, ecosystem health, and community well-being.
Given the ongoing loss of vegetation and rising environmental stress, community-led plantation drives like this are essential. A key strength of YDA’s approach is the direct engagement of children and youth. By involving the younger generation in planting and caring for trees, YDA is fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and long-term ownership.
Way Forward
To build on this momentum, it is recommended that YDA expand its work in the following areas:
- Increase production capacity to supply more plants to communities, schools, and institutions.
- Establish Environmental Clubs in more schools and Union Councils to institutionalize youth leadership on climate.
- Deepen collaboration with government departments, NGOs, and the private sector to support large-scale plantation and DRR initiatives.
These efforts will contribute not only to immediate environmental improvement but also to building a greener, healthier, and more climate-resilient future for coming generations.
